Description: The statue of Big Boy has become an American Icon. It depicts a chubby boy in checkered suspenders holding a hamburger in his outstretched arm. The inspiration for the company name, as well as the model for the Big Boy mascot was Richard Woodruff. At 6 years old, he walked into the diner just as owner Bob Wian was trying to name his new hamburger. Wian said Hello Big Boy to young Woodruff, and the rest is history. Artist Ben Washam would create the charicature which was to become the company logo. Eventually being featured in his own comic book, Big Boy is always an attraction to children visiting the restaurant. The Big Boy statue is often falls victim to school pranks, sometimes disappearing for a few days as he travels to an odd location at a nearby high school.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Big Boy restaurant chain was started in 1936 in Glendale, California by Bob Wian. At that time it was known as Bob's Big Boy. In 1967 the Mariott Hotel chain bought the restaurant franchise. Then in 1987 the Elias Brothers bought the chain and moved the company to Warren, Michigan. In 2000 the company declard bankruptcy. The chain was then sold to investor Robert Liggett Jr., who renamed it Big Boy Restaurants International. At present time, the company has more than 455 Big Boy franchises in the U.S. & Canada.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The chain offers affordable meals for families on the go, featuring burger combinations, a salad bar, a breakfast bar, and cakes and pies. |
